Tourism in Nicaragua is a relatively recent phenomenon. With its airport expansion and its new promotional campaign, there have been significant investments in airlift infrastructure and facilities to house and cater to visitors. The importance of tourism is increasing.

Multiple studies published between 2002 and 2015 have shown that of the three main economic sectors (agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism), tourism offered the largest power to generate foreign exchange earnings, generated the largest increases in job creation, stimulated the largest increases in economic expansion, and had the largest positive impact on income distribution. Recognizing the growing significance of tourism, the private and public sectors have begun to funnel significant resources into tourism.
