New Zealand is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean, approximately 2,300 kilometers (1,429 miles) east of Australia. It has two main land masses (North Island and South Island), and numerous smaller islands, with a total land area of 270,500 square kilometers (103,500 square miles). Its scenic natural landscape has been recognized as a core tourism attraction since the early 1900s, and influenced the development of early rail routes and a system of national parks.
