Milan is the chief city in the province of Milan and in the Lombardy region. With about 1.3 million inhabitants, it is the second largest municipality by population in Italy, after Rome. Milan is the center of the largest metropolitan area in Italy, one of the wealthiest in Europe. It is considered by many to be the most internationally oriented and global city in the country.
