Miami is a large, sprawling metropolis located in the southeastern portion of the United States, in the state of Florida. Because of its strong economic links with Latin America, the nearby Caribbean, and the massive influx of Cuban and other Hispanic immigrants from Cuba and their major role in the local economy and culture, Miami’s identity is often considered the most Latin city in the United States. Jan Nijman notes that Miami has been referred to as “The Capital of Latin America,” “The Gateway to Latin America,” “The Magic City,” and “The Mistress of the Americas” (Nijman, 2011). This identity trait has played an increasing role in Miami’s tourism marketing, along with its warm, subtropical environment.
