The use of marijuana and other narcotics has long been of interest to political, academic, and practitioner groups throughout the world. Legalization of marijuana in certain U.S. states has impacted the use of the drug, sale of the drug, and acceptance of the drug. Colorado and Washington were the first states to legalize marijuana for recreational use, followed by Alaska, Oregon, and Washington, DC. In 2016, voters in California, Massachusetts, Nevada, and Maine also approved making recreational use of marijuana legal, although in Maine opponents of the legalization measure sought a recount of the November 8 election results.
