The Federation of Malaysia, located in Southeast Asia and occupying approximately 330,000 square kilometers, has emerged as a popular destination for domestic and international tourists. Its 11 states on the main peninsula and two states on the island of Borneo, in addition to three federal territories, offer diverse attractions and a tropical climate. Multiethnicity is a central marketing theme. The population is approximately 30 million, half of whom are Malays. Individuals of Chinese and Indian origin and others, including the indigenous peoples of Borneo, comprise the remainder of the population. Malay is the official language, but English is widely spoken. Islam is the official state religion, although sizeable proportions of the population follow other religions, including Buddhism, Christianity, and Hinduism.
