Maglev trains is the common term given to magnetic levitating trains or linear motor trains. The main difference between maglev trains and conventional trains is that maglev trains use magnetic levitation for their main propulsion, only using conventional wheels (usually rubber) when operating at low speeds and when stopped in stations.

The main advantage of maglev trains over conventional trains is that, by floating above the guiderails, they produce a much smoother ride. The system also allows for much greater speeds to be attained. The cost associated with the technology, however, has been one of the reasons for its slow adoption.
