Madrid is the capital of Spain, a country that has consistently been rated as one of the top European destinations over the years. Madrid is located at 646 meters above sea level in the center of the Iberian Peninsula. Along with being the location for many federal government buildings and the official residence of the Spanish royal family, the city is also a business center. Madrid has a population of approximately three million and received nearly nine million domestic and international visitors in the year ending March 2016. According to the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the tourism sector has been a major contributor to Spain’s economic and social development, contributing 6.4% of the nation’s GDP in 2014.
