Lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgender (LGBT) people are a distinct yet diverse segment of hospitality and tourism consumers. LGBT tourism generally refers to the activity of visiting locations and events connected to the LGBT community, as well as the hospitality, travel, and tourism preferences of the LGBT community itself. Although LGBT travelers have always existed, LGBT-specific travel opportunities began in the 1980s and have been on the rise due to the increasing visibility and earning power of LGBT individuals, the increasing popularity of Pride festivals and LGBT film festivals, the legalization of same-sex marriage, and the desire of LGBT people to visit places considered gay-friendly or trans-friendly.
