Kyrgyzstan, officially known as the Kyrgyz Republic, is an emerging destination located in the heart of Central Asia. A landlocked country, Kyrgyzstan has a high appeal for the development of tourism; it is home to a diverse range of ethnic groups and cultures, some of the world’s most pristine environments, and ancient heritage sites linked to early human civilization and the legendary Silk Road. In its infancy as an international destination as well as a democratic state, Kyrgyzstan’s government has firmly placed the tourism industry at the center of its objectives for fostering economic growth, poverty alleviation, and capacity development within the country. However, for this to occur, a number of inhibitors to the sustainable development of the industry must be overcome.
