The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) is a nonprofit organization that works to forward the practice of ecotourism throughout the travel and tourism industries by creating and sharing standards, and by offering education, training, and general assistance to those working in the field. Since 1990, the organization has built a network of highly experienced and passionate professionals dedicated to making tourism not only a sustainable practice, but also a vehicle for conservation, preservation, and community development. TIES operates in more than 120 countries, working with individuals, communities, and organizations to develop, implement, and maintain sustainable tourism practices. The industry professionals who do this work come from many sectors, such as academia, conservation, and architecture. Some are tour guides, hotel and lodge owners, and ecotourists themselves.
