Hungary is a small country (93,030 km2) in Central Europe with nearly 10 million inhabitants. The country is situated in the flat area of the Carpathian Basin surrounded by the Alps and the Carpathian Mountains, with a gently undulating landscape of hills (the highest point being 1,014 m). It has a great and a smaller plain, crossed by two rivers Danube and Tisza, and has several lakes (Balaton, Velence, Fertő). In spite of its size, Hungary has a very turbulent history showing the strength of national emotions, a strong desire for independence.
