Ferries are boats and ships that transport people across stretches of water and take particular routes across the water. They may be sufficiently large to carry 1,000 passengers and vehicles or they just take a handful of individuals. These services are essential to connect communities in peripheral coastal and island communities and regions. These regional passenger transportation systems are also needed for tourism, and governments may well view tourism as a way of financially supporting these services that are often uneconomical but are provided for access.
