The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), a country of natural beauty with a land area of 2,344,858 square kilometers, is located in central Africa. It is bordered to the north by the Central African Republic and South Sudan, to the east by Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania, to the south by Zambia and Angola, and to the west by the Republic of the Congo.

Since its independence, the country experienced a period of turmoil followed by 32 years of dictatorship that ended in 1997. In 2005, a new wave of civil unrest destabilized the country.
