Beijing (Peking) is the capital city of the People’s Republic of China. It is regarded as the political, educational, and cultural center of China. According to the Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development, Beijing’s total tourism income was 428.01 billion yuan in 2014, an increase of 8% compared with 2013. Its total number of domestic and foreign visitors in 2014 was 261 million, a 3.6% increase from the previous year.

Visitors are drawn not only to the historical and cultural attractions of central Beijing but also to many sites in the rural areas of the municipality.
