The concept of alternative tourism is often described as one that developed out of the perceived detrimental effects of mass tourism on destinations. It proposes a change in tourism practices away from the destructive catering for 3S (sun, sea, sand) tourists toward a more benign management of tourism that accommodates alternative tourist motivations, promotes alternative destinations to mass tourist destinations, educates tourists to show alternative behaviors, supports the provision of alternative tourism providers, and is based on an alternative philosophy toward the natural environment.
