As a result of technological progress and economic growth, many people have become more sedentary and less healthy. The rise in health problems associated with more sedentary lifestyles since the 1980s is a serious concern that has led global health authorities to develop policies and incentive campaigns to promote physical activity, often promoting walking. Researchers have found walking to be the most popular and accessible form of physical activity, with little or no expense involved and suitable for all age groups. As well as being popular as a recreational activity, walking programs that are characterized by moderate levels of intensity have been shown to be among the most effective interventions when used to promote physical activity and adherence to exercise.
