Vietnam is becoming a more popular destination in Pacific Asia and is one of the most dynamic touristic regions in the world. While the country only hosted 135,866 foreign visitors in 1990, essentially coming from socialist countries, it recorded more than 8 million international visitors in 2015. In previous years, the largest numbers of visitors have tended to come from nearby countries, particularly China, South Korea, and Japan, with large numbers of visitors also coming from countries with historic ties to Vietnam, including the United States, Russia, and France. Domestic tourism has also witnessed a sharp increase, from 1 million tourists in 1990 to 38.5 million in 2014.
