Vienna (in German, Wien) is one of the most visited urban tourism destinations in Central Europe. Benefiting from its location in the Northeast of Austria, close to the borders of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary, the city attracts millions of tourists every year. Apart from being a hub for travel within Europe, Vienna owes its reputation among national and international visitors to its eventful history, cultural significance, and modern cosmopolitan flair. Historically, the city at the River Danube played a major role in European history and politics. Starting as an ancient Roman settlement, the military camp Vindobona, Vienna later became the resident city of the Habsburg dynasty, an important intermediary between Eastern and Western civilization and the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire later on.
