Tourist attractions are very diverse because of their worldwide number, geographical spread, and difference in appearance and cultural understanding. They can, however, be typified and classified in numerous ways, most often by creation and purpose, day-to-day operation and economics, or marketing and management issues. They have key roles within the tourism system, one of which is that they are the main reason why people travel and why tourism exists in the first place. They tend to develop in complex ways, from a single and main feature of a destination, to clusters of attractions within a destination, to support services that become attractions themselves, and finally to features that are attraction, support service, and destination all in one.
