Singapore is one of the most popular destinations in the Asia Pacific region, despite its relatively small size, and tourism is an important economic activity that is actively supported by the administration. The city-state occupies a main island and several smaller offshore islands at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula in South East Asia. Its total land area is around 718 square kilometers. The country is characterized by its high degree of urbanization and industrialization as well as its open economy and affluence.
