Standard Food Basket

The Standard Food Basket (SFB) is a means to estimate a basic household diet, based on the costs of an estimated basket of basic foods standardized according to percentage of expenditure on food and size of household. This then allows the determination of the poverty line that constitutes poverty in a given region. A household that does not have the income for the SFB is considered below the poverty line. The poverty line is thus determined by local income and resources. The SFB is widely used to determine emergency or refugee foods or supplemental foods by a range of nongovernmental and government agencies and organizations.
