Portugal, one of the poorest countries in Europe, saw its economy shrink by 3 percent in recent years, and 2.6 million people live in poverty. The overall rate of jobless people is about 16 percent and unemployment among young people is close to 40 percent. Many educated Portuguese youth have migrated to other countries to find work. The rate of poverty in 2010 was about 25.3 percent, but for youth up to the age of 17 the rate was 28.7 percent. For people between the ages of 18 and 64 the rate of poverty was 24.1 percent, while the rate was 26.1 percent for people over 64 years old.
