Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia, located in the western Pacific Ocean, were a part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI), a United Nations trust territory under U.S. administration that formed its own constitutional government on May 10, 1979. Through its Compact of Free Association with the United States, Micronesia has been deemed to have been independent since November 3, 1986, although its independence was not recognized by the United Nations until September 17, 1991.

The Federated States of Micronesia include some 607 islands covering a total land area of around 271 square miles (702 square kilometers) and a sea area of some 1 million square miles (2.6 million square kilometers).
