Hull House

Hull House is the name of the settlement house founded by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr in Chicago, Illinois, in 1899. The settlement-house model incorporated a variety of community-based programs, ongoing engagement and reciprocity between the settlement-house residents and community members, and a social-activist mission of reform. Hull House became the most famous settlement house in the United States. Although several well-regarded residents contributed to the settlement house, Jane Addams developed legendary status for her leadership of Hull House and its many activities; her commitment to social reform at local, state, national, and international levels; and the success of many reform initiatives.
