This entry describes the Group of Eight, otherwise referred to as the G-8. It describes the group’s historical development, its roles and objectives and influences in the global system with regard to key issues, as well as its successes and challenges, over the years. This entry also provides information on several activities of the group with regard to addressing key global issues and on the criticisms that have been leveled against the group.

The group was formed from a group of five countries known as the Library Group. The Library Group was created in 1973 in response to the economic recession and the oil and gas crises of the 1970s.
