Financial aid is available in many countries around the world to help students pay for college or university tuition and fees, books, and living expenses. Financial aid can come in several forms. Scholarships are grants that don’t have to be paid back, loans are to be paid back after an individual leaves college or university, and work-study programs offer part-time jobs to university students with financial need. In some countries, a family allowance is provided, usually to the mother of the child when that child attends university. Most financial aid is available only to students who have some form of financial need, although in some countries, financial aid is also awarded on the basis of merit.
