Eliminate Project, The

Launched in 2010, the Eliminate Project is a collaboration between Kiwanis International and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) with the sole purpose of combating and eradicating maternal and neonatal tetanus. Although tetanus itself cannot be entirely eradicated, at the project’s inception the aim was to have the remaining 129 million at-risk women immunized by 2015 at a cost estimated at $110 million. Currently, countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and America are still suffering from a high rate of neonatal and maternal tetanus, primarily due to a lack of hygiene surrounding birth and post-birth, combined with a lack of immunization.
