Czech Republic

The Czech Republic emerged in 1993 when the Central European nation of Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Four years previously democracy had been restored in Czechoslovakia when the Velvet Revolution forced the Communist Party out of power. In addition to Slovakia, the Czech Republic, which covers a land area of 78,867 square miles, is bordered by Germany, Poland, and Austria. The Czech Republic is both stable and prosperous and has been closely integrated into the economy of the European Union (EU). Consequently, the Czech economy has been adversely affected by the global recession of the early 21st century. By 2014, the economy had begun showing signs of recovery. Charges of corruption continue to haunt the government.
