Christmas Seals

Christmas Seals are adhesive labels that are used to seal holiday greeting cards. They are sold for a very small donation to charity and allow the sender to support causes related to lung disease and to wish the recipient of the card good health in the coming year.

Origins of Christmas Seals

The first Christmas Seals were developed by Danish postal worker Einar Holbøll in 1904 in order to raise money to treat children with tuberculosis. In the United States Christmas Seals were first produced by Emily Bissell in 1907. Having heard of the Danish fund-raising tool, Bissell developed seals for an American market in response to the need to fund a Delaware sanitarium (sanitary hospital) for tuberculosis treatment.
