Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan is a central Asian nation located in the southern Caucasus region. Azerbaijan is historically considered a gateway between Eurasia and the Middle East due to its location between these two major regions. In this boundary position, Azerbaijan spans over 86,000 square kilometers and neighbors several countries, including Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Turkey to the west, and Iran to the south. In addition, Azerbaijan’s entire eastern frontier is on the Caspian Sea. The Azerbaijani people are of Azeri-Turkish origin but are also influenced by Russian and Iranian culture. The principle language in Azerbaijan is a Turkish-based language known as Azerbaijani. There are also small pockets of people who speak either Russian or Armenian.
