Albania

The Republic of Albania is a country located in southeastern Europe. Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Greece surround Albania’s borders. Albania is a candidate for official membership in the European Union and is currently a member of NATO, the World Trade Organization, and the United Nations. Albania is one of the poorest nations in Europe. Public debt as of 2013 stood at 60 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP).

History

After the Balkan Wars, Albania declared independence in 1912. In 1939, Italy invaded and formed Greater Albania. Nazi Germany invaded in 1943. After World War II, the country became the People’s Socialist Republic of Albania, a communist state. Finally, in 1991, the socialist republic was dissolved with the creation of the Republic of Albania, a democratic state.
