WomenWatch is a Web site (http://www.un.org/womenwatch) created by the United Nations (UN) in March 1997 to address gender equality issues, support realization of the 1995 Beijing Platform for Action, and provide information about women’s issues across the world. The Beijing Platform for Action, created at the Fourth World Conference on Women, continued the UN’s efforts to increase women’s empowerment and gender equality that began in 1975. The UN believes that equality between men and women is a matter of human rights and a condition for social justice; the human rights of women and girls are an integral part of universal human rights.
