There are nearly as many particular definitions of God as there are societies on the planet. God is the generic term used to identify a supreme intelligence in whose existence many humans believe. Many humans believe in the existence of an intelligent being or beings that existed before humans and that took part in creating the world as humans recognize it. The characteristics and powers attributed to such a being or beings often reflect the values to which a population aspires and the collective fears shared by a population. Degrees of belief in these beings or deities vary by society and by individual, from personal relationships with the beings to disbelief.
