Fiji is an island group located in the South Pacific. It is uncertain exactly when the Fijian islands were first inhabited, but it was probably between 900 and 600 BCE. Oral traditions relate some of the dynastic disputes and conflicts that took place in Fiji over many centuries before the arrival of the Europeans in 1822. Since the first Christian missionaries settled in Fiji in 1830, an attempt has been made to record some of these oral accounts, and also detail the events that have shaped the islands.
