Brunei Darussalam, commonly referred to as Brunei, is a sovereign state in Southeast Asia located on the north coast on the island of Borneo. In December 1962, the premier political party in Brunei, the Partai Rakyat Brunei (PRB, Brunei People’s Party), led a rebellion against the government of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin III, seeking to wrest power and prevent the participation of Brunei and two neighboring British colonies, Sarawak and North Borneo, in the proposed Federation of Malaysia. The Brunei government requested assistance from its protecting power, Great Britain, to quell this revolt, with British and Gurkha troops ending the active phase of the rebellion within a week.
