Women and Peacekeeping

The effects of conflict often differ for women and men. Men often play a more visible role in peacekeeping, whereas women’s roles and rights are frequently neglected in peacekeeping policy and practice. In recent decades, the participation of women in peacekeeping, as a right and gender equality issue, has been recognized. The landmark adoption of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSC Resolution 1325) on women, peace, and security in 2000 sought to recognize and build women’s role in peacekeeping, ensure that peacekeeping missions respond to the differing impacts of conflict on women and men, and promote lasting and sustainable peace.
