U.S. Merchant Marine Academy

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), established at King’s Point, New York, in 1942, is the undergraduate college for merchant mariners that prepares young men and women to become officers for the Merchant Marine, branches of the military, or the transportation industry. One of the five U.S. service academies, its corps of approximately 1,000 midshipmen trains in engineering, navigation, ship administration, maritime law, personnel management, international law, and customs enforcement. The academy’s motto, Acta Non Verba (Deeds Not Words), exemplifies the high standards and decisive action expected of Merchant Marine officers. The academy is also the home of the American Merchant Marine Museum, which houses maritime art and artifacts, and the National Maritime Hall of Fame, which honors famous ships and mariners.
