Tuvalu
A small island nation in the middle of the Oceania continent, Tuvalu has maintained over the centuries a status of collateral actor in conflicts involving countries strategically interested in the Pacific area’s geopolitical resources. During all its history, Tuvalu has represented a major military target due to its position and, paradoxically, to its remoteness.
Precolonial Times
About 2,000 years ago, the Tuvalu islands were gradually occupied by Polynesian explorers belonging to the Lapita cultural horizon as an outpost in their march to the South and Eastern Pacific. Some scholars challenge this dating, however, considering that the occupation probably happened later and was caused by the displacement of people coming from other islands of the Polynesia and Micronesia area escaping from wars and famines.
