Serbia and Montenegro

Serbia and Montenegro was a country in the Balkans region of southeastern Europe that was established after the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991, first as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1992 and then as the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro in 2003. In 2006, Serbia and Montenegro each became independent nations. Since the 1990s, the international image of Serbia and, to a lesser extent, Montenegro has been dominated by associations with a series of particularly bloody and atrocious interethnic civil wars. Powerful media images of war crimes and acts of genocide committed by paramilitary formations influenced the global public opinion to the point of a belief in bellicosity as a primordial characteristic of Serbs and frequently attributed to the whole Balkans.
