Russia, or the Russian Federation—formerly the Russian Soviet Federate Socialist Republic (RSFSR), one of the 15 republics of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR)—is a federal semi-presidential constitutional republic established in 1991 after the disintegration of the USSR, when the former RSFSR became an independent state, Russia. It covers nearly 6.6 million square miles and is divided into 85 separate regions and autonomies. The country reaches from Moscow in the west, over the Ural Mountains and the vast Siberian plains, to the Sea of Okhotsk in the east. It is bounded by Norway and Finland in the northwest; by Estonia, Latvia, Belarus, and Ukraine in the west; by Georgia and Azerbaijan in the southwest; and by Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China along the southern border. ...
