Plaza de Mayo
The Plaza de Mayo is the central square in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. As in many parts of South America, the square fulfils a vital public role as a social meeting place and as a space in which people can rest from the busy city life around them. Steeped in symbols of economic, religious, and political hegemony, the Plaza de Mayo also plays a role in reminding Argentineans of certain systems and values. As the physical and symbolic heart of the country, the square has been the site of many public displays connected with war, including celebrations and protests.
