Namibia

Namibia is a country on the Atlantic coast of southwest Africa. Its immediate neighbors include Angola, Botswana, and South Africa. Several important issues stand out with respect to Namibia, namely, its exquisite ancient rock art; Portuguese, Dutch, and British presence between the 15th and 19th centuries; the high death toll inflicted in the 20th century by German colonial forces; the period of occupation by apartheid South African forces in the 20th century; and the rise of a liberation movement, under the auspices of the South West African People’s Organization (SWAPO). In March 2015, in the context of postcolonial governance, a positive statement about postcolonial Namibia was made when Namibian leader Hifikepunye Pohamba received the Mo Ibrahim Foundation’s Prize, a prestigious award for leadership.
