Criminal Justice System

Criminal justice systems have fundamentally affected the lived experiences of trans people. Since the beginning of the LGBTQ+ rights movement, advocates have sought to prevent violence against trans people, including by seeking to decriminalize nonconforming gender identities and expressions, eradicate police mistreatment of trans people, abolish prisons, and reduce the array of harms trans people experience at the hands of criminal justice systems. Today, while trans people are increasingly recognized for contributing to political change benefiting both trans and cis people, scholarship has aimed to reposition the criminal justice experiences of trans people from the margins to the centers of important criminological conservations and related social action.
