Medicine, Renaissance
During the Renaissance, a period in Europe of cultural, political, economic, and artistic rebirth that took place from the 14th to the 17th century, there were significant, sometimes dramatic, changes in society and in many fields of endeavor and study, including the theories and practice of medicine. Among the major new discoveries of the era was that of the English physician William Harvey, who published his clinical observations on the circulation of the blood, which overturned the accepted wisdom of the four bodily humors, which had been developed by Hippocrates of Cos (c. 460–c. 370 B.C.E.) and Galen of Pergamon (129–c. 200 C.E.) in ancient times.
