Medicine, Contemporary
Medicine is usually defined as the practice concerned with the preservation of health and the prevention, alleviation, or cure of disease. Contemporary medicine is also known as allopathic medicine. The term comes from the ancient Greek prefix ἄλλος, other, opposite, and the suffix πάθος, to suffer. In short, it refers to treating a symptom with its opposite as, for instance, treating an infection with antibiotics or curing constipation with a laxative.
The term allopathic has long been considered derogatory by many in mainstream medicine, as much of standard medical practice does not seem to work in that way.
