Genetic Drift
Genetic drift is a process whereby a trait (such as a gene, a protein’s specific amino acid sequence, or a phenotypic feature) becomes more or less common in a population. Other ways by which trait frequencies change are mutation, migration, and natural selection. A question that biologists commonly try to settle is whether a certain trait is prevalent in some population because there has been selection for it (because it enhances the likelihood of survival and reproduction) or because there has been selection of it but not for it (because it does nothing to enhance the likelihood or survival and reproduction, but it is linked to traits that have been selected for) or instead because of genetic drift.
