Wellness counseling is a tradition that emphasizes optimum functioning in all areas. The emphasis in the wellness counseling process has been variously defined as preventive and developmental. The focus is on the dual facets of awareness and decision making toward a goal of optimum health and well-being in which body, mind, and spirit are integrated. Thus, wellness counseling is the process of helping an individual become aware of the personal meaning of wellness; become conscious of how his or her thoughts, feelings, and behaviors mitigate for or against wellness; and engage in decision making on a continuous basis that contributes to optimum human functioning.
