Meaning in human communication emerges at various levels of interaction in a cultural setting. This cultural context is signaled by the language being spoken, combined with who is speaking and who is listening. The cultural context becomes reified and problematic when converted to writing, where it can be difficult to determine who the author is and whether there is an intended reader. In the age of globalization, some words used in English such as netizen take on a range of applied reference as names, especially when used in a cross-cultural situation.
