Nuclear Treaties

Nuclear treaties are documents that attempt to place restrictions on the flow and use of nuclear material. There are many such examples of these treaties; however, the most notable are the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaties (SALT), Strategic Arms Reduction Treaties (START), and Nonproliferation Treaty. All of these agreements seek to limit nuclear weapons in some way. Moreover, 123 Agreements (the name derives from Section 123 of the U.S. Atomic Energy Act of 1954), which regulate the legal use of fissile material acquired from the United States for peaceful means, such as nuclear energy and scientific research, and nuclear-weapon-free treaties, which [Page 700]ban the use, development, and deployment of nuclear weapons in the treaty areas, also qualify.
